A Methodology for Knowledge Reuse: Application in the Automatic Generation of Operational Protocols for Wastewater Treatment Plants

چکیده
During the preliminary stages of many engineering design tasks, the underlying search space is unbounded and inexact. Initial decisions are made when information is incomplete and many goals are contradictory. This sort of problem appeared in Catalonia for the identification of appropriate wastewater treatment systems in small communities, as well as for proposing appropriate operational and maintenance protocols to these facilities. In this case, the Catalan Water Agency proposed to develop two Environmental Decision Support Systems (EDSS), one to support the selection of the optimal treatment (EDSS-treatment) and another one to support the definition of appropriated operational and maintenance guides (EDSSmaintenance). This paper presents a methodology for supporting the automatic generation of protocols for small wastewater treatment plants operation and maintenance (EDD-maintenance) based on the reuse of available knowledge, acquired during the development an implementation of the EDSS-treatment.

Upgrading Wastewater Treatment Plants Based on Reuse Demand, Technical and Environmental Policies (A Case Study)
Reclamation and reuse programs are an indispensable part of integrated water resource management, particularly in arid and semi arid regions. Yet, the feasibility of sustainable application not only is relied on design, operation and maintenance of wastewater treatment plants, but also could be influenced by the economical and environmental aspects of reuse demands. This study is aimed to illus...
متن کاملAnalysis of the Operational Deficiencies Originating in Design at Wastewater Treatment Plants: A Case Study of the Islamic Republic of Iran
Considerable investments have been made in establishing wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). However, evaluation of the performance of plants during recent years, when more WWTPs have become operational, shows that effluent quality criteria were not met in many instances. Preliminary assessment of the operational problems of WWTPs in Iran disclosed that numerous factors affect this issue of eff...

متن کاملOptimal conditions for the biological removal of ammonia from wastewater of a petrochemical plant using the response surface methodology
High concentrations of nitrogen compounds, such as ammonia observed in the petrochemical industry, are the major environmental pollutants. Therefore, effective and inexpensive methods are needed for its treatment. Biological treatment of various pollutants is a low cost and biocompatible replacement for current physico-chemical systems. The use of aquatic plants is an effective way to absorb th...
